A special nursing home for the elderly (Tokuyo) is a public care facility where people who require care in their daily lives can live while receiving assistance with meals, bathing, toileting, and other daily activities. In principle, those certified as requiring Level 3 or higher care are eligible for admission (though those requiring Level 1 or 2 care may be admitted under special circumstances).

Characteristics of special nursing homes

Because they are public care facilities, they are often more affordable than private nursing homes. As a result, there are many applicants, and in some areas, there may be a waiting list for admission.

Preparation for admission

Common items include everyday clothes, underwear, pajamas, shoes, towels, and daily necessities. Facilities often use laundry and dryers, and you may be asked to write your name on all clothing. Choose clothes that are easy to change into and that won't get damaged easily even after repeated washing and drying.
