There are reasons why people tend to become constipated as they get older.

4 reasons why you are prone to constipation

  • The movement of the intestines gradually slows down.
  • You may become less aware of thirst and more prone to dehydration.
  • People go out less and have fewer opportunities to exercise.
  • As the amount of food eaten decreases, the amount of material for stool also decreases.

Measures you can start today

  • Drink water frequently.
  • Take walks and engage in other moderate physical activity.
  • Incorporate dietary fiber from vegetables, legumes, seaweed, etc.
  • Don't hold back your urge to defecate.

Not having a bowel movement every day doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong.

The frequency and rhythm of bowel movements vary from person to person. The important thing is to monitor whether there are any changes compared to your usual bowel movement rhythm. If constipation persists for a long time, or if you experience severe abdominal pain or bloody stools, consult your doctor as soon as possible.

When you're constipated and your stomach is bloated, loose-fitting clothing around the waist and pants that are easy to pull up and down when using the toilet can make you more comfortable.
