When a move into a care facility is decided, many families struggle with preparing clothes. "What should we prepare, how much, and what kind?" Based on the questions we often hear at our Sangenjaya store, here is how to go about it.
First, check the facility's packing list
Each facility has its own rules on what clothing to bring, how many, and how to label names. If the facility gave you a list, start from that. If not, it's reassuring to check with the facility before the move.
Examples of clothing to prepare
- Front-opening tops (shirts, cardigans, etc.)
- Trousers with a relaxed waist
- Pajamas
- Underwear
- Socks
- A light layer (for changing seasons or air-conditioning)
How many you need depends on how often the facility does laundry and how much storage there is. Decide how many days' worth to prepare, including spares, together with the facility's list.
5 points to check when choosing
1. Is it dryer-safe?
Facilities often use commercial dryers, and clothing that isn't dryer-safe can shrink or wear out.
2. Is it front-opening and easy to change?
Front-opening clothes can be put on without raising the arms high, which eases the burden on both the wearer and the person helping.
3. Will they spend long hours in a wheelchair?
If they sit for long periods, choose trousers that don't feel tight around the stomach and hips.
4. Do they wear disposable pants?
Worn over disposable pants, the usual size can feel tight. We recommend trying them on.
5. How will you label names?
Facilities require names on clothing. Choose a method that won't fade after repeated washing.
You don't need to replace everything
Clothes you already have can still be used if they are dryer-safe and easy to change into. Check what you have and buy only what's missing. Only what's needed, only as much as needed.
