Before you start wondering, "How can I get them to eat?", I'd like you to consider "why they won't eat." There can be a variety of reasons behind their refusal to eat.
"I want to eat, but I can't."
Sometimes, poor appetite isn't caused by the food itself, but rather by the eating environment or the condition of your mouth. This could include ill-fitting dentures, a dry mouth making eating difficult, difficulty chewing and swallowing, or an unsuitable table or chair height.
Sometimes you feel like you don't want to eat.
When you start eating alone more often, feel unwell, or don't find food as delicious as before, the enjoyment of eating diminishes, and your appetite naturally decreases.
Before thinking, "They won't eat this, so let's try to get them to eat this," it's important to consider why they can't eat. If it's difficult for your family to make a judgment on their own, consult your doctor, dentist, or registered dietitian.
